A healthy gut - Intestinal health is more than good digestion

A healthy intestinal mucosa is not only important for optimum food utilisation, but also for our well-being. The subject of intestinal health concerns many people on a day-to-day basis. It’s good to know that everyone can do something to help achieve it: A balanced, high-fibre diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, a sufficient amount of fluids (at least 2 litres a day) and enough exercise can do yourself and your body a lot of good.

Intestinal immune system

In addition to the purely digestive function, the intestine and its intestinal mucosa are important components of the immune system. This essential task is self-evident and vital to life, since the intestine forms the largest contact face to the outside world, with a surface area of approx. 400 m2. This function is ensured by means of the so-called intestinal barrier. It consists of the intestinal immune system, with approx. 80% of the body's immune cells plus a protective layer. It is formed by tightly connected cells of the intestinal mucosa and a covering mucus layer that houses the intestinal flora – also called microbiome. This barrier decides what is harmless and what might be harmful, thus protecting the body from unwanted invaders and pollutants.

The intestinal barrier – strong and sensitive

What can affect the health of the intestinal mucosa and the local immune system?

  • chronic stress, both physical and psychological – which weakens the immune system and leads to chronic inflammation, e.g. of our intestinal mucosa
  • unhealthy eating habits – too much, too fast, too fatty, with too much protein, too late, insufficient intervals between meals
  • lack of exercise
  • Drugs, especially antibiotics, that attack not only pathogens but also healthy bacteria and thus the protective layer of the intestinal mucosa

What are the consequences of an intestinal barrier dysfunction?

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea or constipation
  • Damage to the intestinal mucosa
  • Food intolerances
  • Allergies such as hay fever
  • Relapsing or regularly recurring infections (for example, common colds, weakened immune system)

With vitamin B12 and folic acid

Vitamins are essential micronutrients that the human body is unable to produce itself. Water-soluble vitamins, such as B vitamins, cannot be stored. This means that they need to be consumed regularly in food. The advantage: water-soluble vitamins cannot be overdosed.

A healthy and varied diet is important for vitamin B intake. For example, all green vegetables and salads are rich in folic acid. The folate content is particularly high in spinach, broccoli, endive and also legumes. Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal foods such as eggs, fish, meat, or dairy products.

B vitamins are needed to maintain many functions and metabolic processes. They are important in the context of hormone production; affect blood flow; are involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fat; and contribute to the formation of blood and the healthy function of nerves.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is important for cell renewal, healthy nerves, and the function of the immune system. In addition, vitamin B12 is important in enabling folic acid activation in the first place*.

Folic acid is also called vitamin B9. The cell vitamin is, among other things, significant for all growth processes with cell division and for the immune system**.

of the immune system.
** Folate contributes to a normal function of the immune system. Folate has a role in the process of cell division.

With biotin

Biotin is also commonly called vitamin H or vitamin B7. Like the other vitamins in the B group, biotin is water-soluble. It is not stored in the body in greater amounts and should therefore be supplied daily. Among other things, biotin contributes to the maintainance of a normal intestinal mucosa; it is important for a normal metabolism and for the nervous system*. Biotin is contained in foods such as dried yeast, beef liver, egg yolks, or oatmeal.

* Biotin contributes to
the maintenance of normal mucous membranes
the maintenance of normal skin
the maintenance of normal hair
normal energy-yielding metabolism
normal function of the nervous system
normal macronutrient metabolism
normal psychological function
