Vitamin B12 deficiency may manifest as:
- Hyperchromic macrocytic megaloblastic anaemia (pernicious anaemia, Biermer's anaemia, Addison anaemia; these are maturation disorders of red blood cells).
- Funicular spinal disease (spinal cord damage)
Vitamin B12 deficiency confirmed by laboratory diagnosis can occur due to:
- Years of malnutrition (e.g. due to a strictly vegetarian diet).
- Malabsorption (insufficient absorption of vitamin B12 in the intestine) due to
- insufficient production of intrinsic factor (a protein produced in the lining of the stomach that is needed to absorb vitamin B12),
- disorders in the end section of the ileum (part of the small intestine), such as sprue,
- fish tapeworm infestation or
- blind loop syndrome (change in the course of the intestine after gastric surgery).
- Congenital vitamin B12 transport disorders.
At the start of treatment, 1 ml of Vitamin B12-Injektopas® 1000 µg (equivalent to 1000 µg cyanocobalamin) is administered twice a week for the first few weeks after diagnosis.
If there is evidence of vitamin B12 uptake disorder in the intestine, 1 ampoule of Vitamin B12-Injektopas® 100 µg is then administered once a month (equivalent to 100 µg cyanocobalamin).
Method of administration
Vitamin B12-Injektopas® is usually administered intramuscularly.
It can also be given slowly intravenously or subcutaneously.
1 ampoule of 1 ml contains:

Cyanocobalamin 1000 µg
Excipients: Sodium chloride, water for injections.

Active substance: Cyanocobalamin 1000 µg per ml solution for injection.
